Pre-release article: we separate what’s official from what’s been reported. We haven’t installed the game, and we’ll update this page when Rockstar or the console stores publish an official size.

How big is GTA 6?
On Oct 27, 2026, the PlayStation Game Size account on X, which tracks PlayStation Store data, posted that the GTA VI Standard Edition is a 210 GB download on PS5. GameSpot and other outlets reported the figure the next day. If it’s right, GTA 6 will be one of the largest console downloads ever, roughly double the size of Red Dead Redemption 2.
Here’s where things stand:
- Official: launch on Nov 19, 2026 for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, with digital pre-loading from Nov 12 (Take-Two).
- Reported, not confirmed: 210 GB on PS5 for the Standard Edition.
- Unknown: the Xbox Series X|S size, the Ultimate Edition size, and whether 210 GB is the download or the final installed size.
What 210 GB means for your console
Consoles never let you use the full capacity printed on the box, because the system software takes a share. Here’s roughly how much room GTA 6 would take on each model:
| Console | Usable internal storage | Share used by a 210 GB game |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 (2020, 825GB) | about 667 GB | about 31% |
| PS5 Slim (1TB) | about 848 GB | about 25% |
| PS5 Pro (2TB) | about 1.89 TB | about 11% |
| Xbox Series X (1TB) | about 802 GB | about 26%* |
| Xbox Series S (1TB) | about 800 GB | about 26%* |
| Xbox Series S (512GB) | about 364 GB | about 58%* |
Usable storage figures are approximate and shrink slightly as system software grows. *Xbox percentages assume the Xbox version is a similar size, which hasn’t been confirmed.
On the original PS5, Series X and either PS5 Slim, GTA 6 fits alongside a handful of other big games. On a 512GB Series S, a game this size would take more than half the usable space, so Series S owners should plan carefully.
Why we suggest clearing 250 GB
That’s our own planning figure, not an official requirement. It covers the reported 210 GB plus some headroom. Launch-day patches usually make games bigger, not smaller, and consoles need some free space to unpack downloads. If an official size is published, go by that.
Can you play GTA 6 from an external drive?
- PS5: PS5 games can be stored on a USB drive but must run from the internal SSD or an M.2 SSD installed in the expansion slot. Sony supports PCIe Gen4 M.2 NVMe drives from 250GB to 8TB.
- Xbox Series X|S: Series X|S games must run from internal storage or an official Storage Expansion Card. A USB drive can hold them for storage, and you move them back to play.
So a USB drive is useful as a parking spot for games you’re not playing, but GTA 6 itself has to sit on fast storage. Our storage expansion explainer goes through the options.

Your pre-load checklist
- Check free space now: on PS5, Settings → Storage; on Xbox, Settings → System → Storage devices.
- Delete or move finished games until you have about 250 GB free. Our step-by-step guide to freeing up console storage before GTA 6 explains how to do it without losing saves.
- Xbox players can also free up space by managing games in Quick Resume and storage.
- Turn on automatic downloads so the pre-load can start on Nov 12 while the console is in rest mode.
- Check when GTA 6 unlocks in your time zone.
